Eguisheim is near Colmar in Alsace, in the Haut-Rhin department of north-east France.
Eguisheim is such a pleasant surprise, boasting fantastic circular cobbled streets with beautiful traditional medieval half-timbered houses, most of the 15th-16th century (in Fachwerk style - a rural, Germanic style, where the construction is based on a stone ground floor but the upper floors are apparently made on wooden structure, with decorations, shutters and window jardinières).
In France there is the notion of “village fleuri” - village in bloom. Well, Eguisheim is listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France. and the holder of the highest award - 4* ville fleuri. Eguisheim is a picture postcard gem, right from the entrance when you walk in time on the bohemian Rue du Rempart street, following the charming Grand Rue, with its fantastic colourful manor houses ( the Unterlindenhof dates back to 1051 ) and Inns, painted in yellow, blue, green and pink, so typical of Alsace.
However, if you ask me what are the most sought-after attractions I would say the 8th century Eguisheim Castle, the birthplace of Pope St Leo IX (1002 -1054), whose statue watches in front of the church facing a superb fountain, and the Church of Saint-Peter and Saint-Paul, both featuring Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements.
Do you know that in the 16th century the color was a symbol of social success? The houses of Eguisheim have on their façades thick bars with geometric figures along with flower-filled jardinières. You will notice that the houses have over the entrance some inscriptions invoking Divine protection, but which also refer to the curious nature of the locals.
Eguisheim is the place where the Alsatian wine was born - " berceau des vins d'Alsace". Start your walk through the "Sentier Viticole" and fill the glass with some of the most popular wines in the region: Riesling, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc/Noir/Gris and Sylvaner.
What to visit next door - Eguisheim surroundings: Colmar, Turckheim, Ribeauville, Riquewihr, Mulhouse.
