Perth is about 3.5 hours from Melbourne by plane. If you take one of the budget Aussie airlines like Jetstar, a roundtrip can be as little as $375.
Perth is a great place for animal lovers. Besides small zoo Perth Zoo, Caversham Wildlife Park there where you can see live a great variety of birds, kangaroos, koala bears, or other animals at large in a large fenced area, and where visitors can feed staff animals.
I recommend : Hula Bula Bar is in the center (it's small but it's very cool), The Classroom in North Perth is excellent bar, Five Bar in Mount Lawley - about this are places where out new, and in general people who go there are my age around 30 years and it's full of kid.
For out for a coffee and a little pope is La Galette De France in South Perth where good coffee and croissants are excellent, Gipsy Tapas in Fremantle, Little Creatures in Fremantle (is the bar and restaurant and cafe) I like it very much , Cantina 663 in Mount Lawley.
Restaurants in Subiaco cool are Lappa (Brazilian restaurant with excellent food), Chez Pierre in Nedlands (superb French restaurant, a little expensive but worth it for special occasions, Little Creatures in Fremantle, Amuse in East Perth (excellent)
What you could do: Take a taxi from the airport to the nearest train station - maybe Guildford? Check out Guildford for an hour, go to the city, check it out for a couple of hours and then hop back on the train and get off at Perth Central station. Take the cat up to Kings Park, admire the view, and then have some lunch. Take the train again to Freo, spend a couple of hours there, by the time you're done it'll be time to head back.
... swam with dolphins at Mandurah (an hour down the freeeway) . Sorry can't remember the name of the place but they are on the internet under Dolphins Mandurah. It wasn't expensive and was a full day out swimming with (but no physical contact )wild dolphins..
... hire bikes and took the ferry to Rottnest Island. Bikes can be hired at the ferry port.
...Where to stay... I stayed in the City Stay which I wouldnt stay in again myself, I moved on to the Parmelia Hilton which was excellent. If your looking to stay outside the city Scarborough has an amazing beach and a good choice of restaurants/bars, when in Scarborough we stayed in the Comfort Inn west beach lagoon which was a good choice and very good value for money!
