Lake Garda (Lago di Garda, or Gardasee) is located in the Northern part of Italy just a short 2 hours and a half drive from Milan. We heard that in high season all over Lake Garda it's so crowded, so we decided to visit the lake in this beautiful month of the year - April, when the flowers bloom and the temperatures rise generously at 22 degrees Celsius.
Limone sul Garda is studded everywhere with plantation of lemon, orange and cedar, the promenade stretches from the port to downtown, the city itself being an attraction, looking like a postcard. Bordered by the lake and mountains, Limone is a romantic destination, whether day or night, has a sensual charm.
How to get to Lake Garda - Limone sul Garda
The nearest airports are in Milan and Verona. Good bus or train connections are available up to the Lake Garda. Ferries and boats are also available, of course with a higher price.
Eating out in Limone sul Garda
In Limone sul Garda we find quite a lot of options for dining or simply to taste the local dishes. Here's what I chose.
PASTICCERIA BAR GELATERIA PIVA, located on a charming street, just behind the main shopping area of Limone sul Garda, near the Saint Benedetto Church. Gelateria Piva it’s a great spot to try a limon meringue cake, a strong coffee or the fantastic spumante with strawberries.
RISTORANTE GEMMA, suitable for romantic view over Lake Garda, it’s located right at the lake front. You could book your table in advance, if you want to catch up the breathtaking belvederes while you are dining. Try lasagna, sea food and the wide selection of regional wines. Quite expensive but with scenic views.
RESTAURANT TOVO it’s a charming run family restaurant located in a beautiful area full of greenery up the hills, around 10-15 minutes walk from Limone’s centre. The outdoor restaurant is surrounded by olive trees, providing good well priced food. At Tovo restaurant the queen it’s the pizza, in all her splendor, flavors and sizes. Also the fresh fish dishes are a good option, as well as the desserts such as tiramisu and pannacotta.
Local products of Lake Garda
Italy is a country blessed with both pure beauty and rich nature that offers prosperity and diversity transposed into their fabulous local products. I could write thousands of pages related to the Italian food, wine regions, olive and lemon groves, famous sorts of cheese, meat and sweets, so it’s kind of difficult to synthesize it in a few sentences. Yet, I will try.
Local products from Lake Garda are definitely a marvel, from the extra virgin olive oil, known for its strong flavor and clearness, the citrus fruits of Lake Garda, from which is made the famous Limoncino liqueur and the delicious lemon cream, to the richness Garda vineyards - the living source of the fragrant assortments wines such as Merlot, Cabernet and Vino Santo.
A famous drink that dates from the Middle Ages that Italians still worships and keeps alive even today, raising its manufacturing process to the level of art - is Grappa.
These days, this drink is done in vacuum distillation, using one kind of grapes and aging it in acacia, cherry or oak barrels - innovation brought by the distillery Marzadro. Italians believe in the role of the digestive drinks, so grappa is served in small glasses at the end of the meal.
The famous Valeggio tortellini - rolled pasta rings filled with meat are a tradition in Italy, made by hand, can be purchase from local pasta shops. If you arrive on Lake Garda a nice souvenir might be a jar of honey, the region is known for producing first-class honey - assortment such as: honeydew, acacia, chestnut or millefiori. The pears, plums and wild strawberries, also the blessed result of the fertile soils of Lake Garda, can be found in most restaurants in various dishes or freshly served. If go further from the famous mozzarella, Italy has more than that. For example, Grana Padano - a semi-fat hard cheese, mellow and tasty flavor. If you prefer a lighter consistency choose Formagella di Tremosine. Products made from fresh meat and fish are also in great demand in Italy.
About Limone sul Garda
Limone sul Garda, part of the province of Brescia, in the Lombardy region, is a place that I’ve noticed a couple of months ago, wanting to find some beautiful places near Milan with good photographic landscapes and that specific Italian charm. And here I found it.
This picturesque city is dominated by dramatic mountains and rocky cliffs rising up impetuously behind the waterfront town center. The Italian limone word makes us think of the lemons, but his Latin origin is older than the lemons, meaning boundary.
As you walk around Limone’s paradise you will fall in love hopelessly with this poetic place, where the olive groves, oranges and lemons, vineyards, tropical palm trees and magnificent aloes transposes you into dreaminess. Not to mention the charm of the narrow cobblestone streets, cute balconies dressed up with fragrant flowers and when you get on the lake, there continues the story. In the distance you can see the boats, swans and ducks wander quietly, some of them nest on the beach full of pebbles and the music of the waves seems interminable.
On those winding streets of Limone you will find lots of cafes, restaurants, shops and hotels, quite expensive actually. It’s such a great idea to opt for a pair of comfy shoes, considering those paved streets, quite steep, so you’ll get the chance to enjoy a relaxing walking instead of having some unwanted wounds. Paddle boards or surfboards are also available to rent.
